The Oaks

The brief

This kitchen needed to serve multiple functions within a busy household. As well as being the heart of a large family home, the space also supports a property rental and a home-based cookery and AGA demonstration business. The client wanted a hardworking, versatile kitchen with a linear aesthetic and a classic contemporary feel - capable of handling daily family life, professional use, and entertaining guests.

The design

This Plain Norfolk kitchen balances elegance and utility, with a thoughtfully zoned layout designed to cater to multiple users and purposes.

At the centre is a large, statement island, designed not just as a social and visual anchor, but as the main working zone. It facilitates efficient movement and workflow, while the perimeter cabinetry houses defined areas for cooking, washing, and food storage, supporting both professional demonstrations and everyday family life.

A standout feature of the design is the designated lower worktop area - complete with sink, tap and ample prep space - created especially for the family’s four children. This space encourages independence and hands-on learning in the kitchen, allowing the younger members of the household to develop their culinary confidence.

Key design features include:

  • Chunky-legged pan drawers near the cooking zone for a classic touch.
  • An open island end facing the dining area, keeping the space sociable and accessible.
  • A single curved corner unit that adds softness and flow next to the cooker.
  • A secondary prep sink and tea-making station strategically placed for ease and efficiency.
  • A multi-spice wall unit and open shelving that provide both function and an attractive backdrop.
A kitchen with a stainless steel refrigerator and a sink.

One of the most charming personal touches is found on the bar side of the island, where individual drawers for each child are beautifully hand-carved with their names and fitted with finger-hole openings - creating a playful yet practical design element that enhances the sense of family and ownership within the space.

This kitchen is a fine example of form meeting function - offering performance for professional use, ease for family cooking, and heart-warming personal touches that make it truly one-of-a-kind.
