Our Kitchen Design Process

Our kitchen design process: a step-by-step guide

Designing a bespoke kitchen is an exciting journey - a collaborative and thoughtful process tailored to your needs, lifestyle and space. Every step of the process centres on you and we tailor our service to suit your requirements. Design is paramount, not sales.

Step 1: Understanding your needs

We begin with a conversation to understand what you’re looking for in a kitchen. This isn’t necessarily about choosing colours or styles yet - it’s about the big picture. We’ll ask lots of questions to uncover your preferences, for example:

  • How do you use your kitchen?
  • Do you cook alone or with family?
  • Do you have specific appliances in mind, such as an AGA/range cooker or eye-level?
  • What is your wish list for your new kitchen?
  • What do you love - and dislike - about your current/past kitchens?

We discuss what the kitchen means to you and how you wish to live and work in the space. The more we understand your wishes and desires, what you want from the space and how you live, the better placed we are to begin to create your kitchen for living, for life. This stage focuses on functionality and spatial planning, helping us identify how your kitchen needs to work for you before we move into design details.

Step 2: Brainstorming ideas

Our team begins to develop initial concepts. We treat your kitchen as if it were our own, proposing ideas that challenge assumptions and introduce new possibilities. For example, we might suggest open or enclosed pantries, uniquely shaped peninsulas or Islands or unexpected storage solutions.

This stage is a dialogue. We listen more than we talk, encouraging you to explore what’s truly important. It’s not about pushing our ideas but about opening up possibilities and ensuring the design feels just right for you. At this initial stage, we also provide a budget guide or work to fit the design in-line with your desired budget.

Step 3: Site visit (if needed)

For a deeper understanding of your space, we may visit your home during early stages. This is particularly useful for complex layouts or unique requirements and can be a valuable step to ensure the design aligns perfectly with your home’s dimensions and character from the onset. A nominal charge may apply, but this is fully refundable on placing your order.

Step 4: Initial ideas and details

Once we have a clear idea of your needs, we create a detailed design proposal. This includes a scale drawing of the interior, showing all the key elements:

  • Placement of appliances like dishwashers and cookers, along with sinks and dishwashers
  • Storage solutions, such as pull-out larders, corner solutions, pantries and internal fitments
  • Door styles and layout

Our designs are thorough and filled with innovative ideas that make you think of possibilities you might not have considered. At this stage, we also provide a detailed quotation so you understand everything that has been included.

Step 5: Showroom visit and refining the design

Next, we invite you to our showroom to review the design and make any adjustments. This is where we begin to discuss finishes, styles and colours in more detail. For elements like kitchen islands or peninsula’s, we provide physical templates that you can place in your home. By setting them at worktop height and moving around them, you’ll get a real sense and feel of how the design and shape works in your space.

This hands-on approach helps us eliminate potential issues and ensure every choice - colour, layout, or material - feels perfect.

Step 6: Moodboards and presentations

After a colour consultation; where we offer as much support as you require, we create detailed mood boards and presentations to bring the vision to life. Once colours are chosen, we produce sprayed colour samples in the finish of your kitchen, along with worktop samples and hardware samples for you to make final decisions in your space. We discuss every element, from lighting and handles to finishes, supported by samples you can see and touch.

Step 7: Technical and production drawings

Once you’re completely happy with the design, we prepare production drawings for the workshop. Before these are sent, we conduct a technical survey to confirm every detail. You’ll also receive a final copy of these drawings, giving you peace of mind that the design is exactly as agreed.

Step 8: Crafting your kitchen

With over 35 years of experience, our workshop team brings your design to life with our designers. Every piece is crafted with care, precision and attention to detail. Depending on the complexity, actual production typically takes around 6-8 weeks.

Step 9: Installation and beyond

When your kitchen is ready, installation marks the next exciting phase where our team work in unison to bring the dream to reality, seamlessly. Once your new kitchen has been completed this isn’t the end of the journey - it’s the start. We remain on hand to address any questions and provide aftercare support, ensuring your kitchen remains as functional and beautiful as the day it was installed.

How long does the process take?

The design stage is never rushed, typically taking a minimum of 4 weeks or as long as required. When you are ready to confirm, we book your preferred production and installation dates into our schedule, so your dates are secure. Once designs are finalised, production takes around 6-8 weeks before work can begin.

Starting early gives you time to think about every decision, ensuring your kitchen is not just built but truly tailored to your life.

This process evolves naturally, adapting to your needs and preferences as we go. Creating a bespoke kitchen isn’t just about the destination - it’s about enjoying the journey.
